FARO Focus Premium Laser Scanner: Designed for Complete Integration

Written by Justin Sadgrove | Sep 11, 2022 9:37:28 PM

The new Focus Premium Laser Scanner by FARO is the latest in 3D scanning and measurement technology, with next-generation reality capture that delivers up to 50% faster scans and better results compared to its predecessors, with highly developed options for integration.

The upgraded version is built to withstand even the most challenging environments in construction, public safety, and operations and maintenance, with advanced capabilities to efficiently capture, store and share data.

Let’s take a closer look at how the new model differs from the previous versions, and how it will help meet the demands of today’s increasingly digital workforce.

What’s new?

When first looking at the new Focus Premium Scanner, it’s clear that the housing components are made from a different material to add more reliable protection for rugged environments. The rubber material around the edges allows for better grip to avoid the device slipping out of your hands during setup.

However, the main differences can be seen in the internal processes of the device. When compared to the FARO Focus S and Focus M, the latest model has a more powerful processor unit, allowing users to generate complex scans in around 1 minute. Depending on the settings, this is a time saving of between 30-50%, which makes a significant difference on site.

The latest colour camera technology

The Focus Premium now includes the latest colour camera technology, which enables the device to capture scans with up to 266 megapixel colour information for even more detail than before. This optimised internal camera drastically improves on-site compensation, and the two internal WiFi antennas make for better connectivity.

Advanced PC for internal storage and advanced processing

Additionally, the new internal PC system now includes internal storage that is 22 times faster than the old version, with up to 128 gigabytes of high-speed SSD storage, for maximum scan capacity and ultra-fast scan processing. For on-site registration when combining multiple scans using overlapping data sets, the Focus Premium completes projects much more efficiently with real-time awareness of errors or missing data.

New temperature controlled laser module

The laser module has also been upgraded and now works on a different wavelength to that of the previous versions. The new laser module is temperature controlled and can adapt to the environment, whether it’s working in an indoor or outdoor setting.

Complete integration with FARO Stream and FARO Sphere

FARO has developed two complementary products to create a powerful and seamless union between three distinctive technologies. Stream is the first mobile app that connects FARO hardware with FARO Sphere cloud-based technology, and works as the bridge between FARO Sphere and the Focus Premium. Having this complete connectivity enables users to capture data confidently while simultaneously streamlining their workflow tasks to reduce the time to decision.

FARO Stream

The Stream app allows you to link the hardware to the cloud-based software to make on-site capture workflows far more efficient by keeping all your data in the FARO ecosystem. It provides live feedback of the captured scans during the pre-registration function in real-time to maximise efficiency for data capture using the Focus Premium Scanner.

This boosts confidence for scan operations in AEC applications, knowing that the data captured is correct the first time and that no additional site visits will be required due to missing information. After the scan is complete, the Focus Premium Scanner also has the ability to include complementary data like field annotations and photographic images to the project. Stream then effortlessly integrates the data captured into Sphere, and continues doing some of the work automatically while the operator returns from the field.

FARO Sphere

The Focus Premium scanner is unique in the way that it enables users to share on-site data that it collects using the Stream app and sends that information to Sphere, creating a completely centralised experience. Users can work in this collaborative environment across FARO point cloud applications with customer support tools to enable faster 3D capture, processing and delivery, through the ultra-secure, single point sign-on process.

Using Stream and Sphere, registration begins in the field and processing is carried out in the background while the Focus Premium operator is making their way back to the office. This means that off-site colleagues are able to work on the data or share it with end-users using the FARO WebShare Software - the world’s leading collaborative point cloud project management solution.

The FARO Focus Premium Scanner has been upgraded to keep up with the demands of an increasingly remote working environment, using complete connectivity between the field and the office through the Stream app and Sphere software. Not only has the Focus Premium been developed to collect data more efficiently on site, but the integration with FARO’s innovative software means teams can collaborate more effectively as soon as the data has been collected, from anywhere at any time.
